Deciphering text
« on: Saturday 13 May 17 09:45 BST (UK) »
Are there any highly perceptive people on the forum that can help me to decipher the text in the story Runaway Horse in com. 5 please  The words Maybank am name Kirtland make it significant to me but my eyes are not good enough to work out the rest other than the capitals

No doubt people will have a go. But I suggest you contact Slough Library for a better printout. They hold the microfilms from which this series of images was produced. The staff there are very helpful.

It's not your eyes Nifty!   ;)
It is the most awful mess just where your story is!

As Bookbox says, why not ask Slough Library for a printout and see if it's any better.

Thanks for the ideas.
I agree that the staff in Slough Library are helpful, or, at least they were when I visited there several years ago. I hope that the facilities there are better than they were during my visit. They looked to be stretched and woefully underfunded then and I am not sure that they will be any better in the light of the present situation. I would visit personally but live abroad and it is not very practicable for the foreseeable future. I thought that someone may have access to imaging program that facilitate easier reading of certain documents. I think that I saw some such thing on Ancestry or a similar forum when my subs were current.

Edit Goldie. I notice that you have a burgess in your famiy tree. I think that I have one in mine also. I will try and chase it up as there is an outside chance tha we have a common ancestor in the distant past.
Edit
My old Ancestry programme is not functioning very well but I think that here was a Jane Burgess who married a William Green b. 1803 d 1889. I think that woud mead that Jane nee Burgess was my GG Grandmother

Which county is your Burgess in nifty?
Mine are in Cheshire.

I don't think a 'clean -up' imaging program could do  much to the state of the article in the newspaper your report is in!  ;)

Definitely not your eyes!!

You may have to try and get a better copy.  Even enhancing the image didn't make it any clearer!!! :-\

I did not get too far with the plan but it is on-going
I have made out what I can of the article linked in op and would be delighted if anyone (preferably with knowledge of the locality) to read over the text again and try and fill in the blank spaces as indicated by ?'s

 RUNAWAY HORSE
COLLISION WITH A MOTOR CAR

A horse and rail? belonging to Mr.  ?  Murray at\of? Hawthorne Park went off outside a house in Upton Park on Saturday and the animal path that ran through the North Gate end? at the Windsor Road.

?        ?  Atle?? HIll cross road

And the path at the North Gate

WIndsor Road  ?

Was the property of Mr. Ernest Kirtland at Maybank ?  Road Slough and was driven by Mr.  ?   ?   ?  of  ? ? WIndsor.

sorry this  is not clearer but I seem to have lost some of the spacing in transfering information. Has anybody any idea where Hawthorn Park may be? I thought perhaps here http://www.surrey.ca/culture-recreation/2082.aspx
