Kirkburton look up
« on: Saturday 13 May 17 14:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I wonder if someone could look up a marriage which took place on Nov 14th 1734 at Kirkburton. According to the Find My Past transcript, it's between Nicholas Ibberson and Hannah Jillott but I'm not certain either of the surnames is accurate.
Thanks
Paul

Looking at the image of the register, I'd say Ibberson is definitely what's written. Taking account of local accents and low levels of literacy, and the general variability of spellings at that time, the same person may well be recorded elsewhere as Ibbotson, Ibbison etc.

The bride's surname certainly looks like Jillot. George Redmonds' Dictionary of Yorkshire Surnames gives a few instances of it from Kirkburton, and he says it's a variant of Gillott found in a few parishes round there. Other variants of one or the other include Jellott and Gillat.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson
