Don't think a carpenter.  I have gone into the geneology website and found a couple more. Will have to do some more digging at this end.

Found him in the 1911 census and it did say County Meath. No siblings but mum thinks he left Ireland with a brother but she has no idea of name.  Dad's occupation on the birth certificate says contractor.

Do you mean 'dad's occupation on the marriage certificate says contractor'?

Yes Patrick Clark (John's dad) on marriage certificate says contractor​

No Irish people. The two witnesses were her brother and sister. My mum thought his dad Patrick came over but she can't remember now.
