I O F M U Sydney 1857
« on: Thursday 18 May 17 09:56 BST (UK) »
Hi there
Can anyone tell me what this organisation might have been devoted to please? It is the heading in an SMH article followed by Loyal Albert Lodge which sounds like a ? Masons Lodge? They were meeting at the Draper's Arms in South Head Rd and my ancestor was the "NG" - it is about calling a meeting.

John was a painter if that is any help?
Thanks for any suggestions
Cheers
Meegan

Is it  I.O.O.F.M.U ? which would be "Independent Order of Oddfellows Manchester Unity"

Here's an advertisement from January 1847 for the IOOFMU, Loyal Albert Lodge.  Their dinner that evening was at the Victoria Inn, on South Head Road.

In the following Advertisement, you can see the Lodge was No. 4196, Manchester Unity.

Manchester Unity is still active. http://www.manchesterunity.com.au/site/

Is that similar to the SMH cutting you mentioned in your opening post?

Is your ancestor John GOSTELOW, N.G.

Thanks so much, majm. I did a search on the letters and came back with all sorts of things, nothing like that!

Yes, my ancestor is John Gostelow. Possibility it is he although he would have only been 22 yrs old in 1857 which might be a bit young to be the Noble Grand I'd imagine. He was a painter, had a couple of insolvency occurrences, tried to commit suicide by cutting his own throat and died not long after in Callan Park Asylum at age 61

His first wife, mother to 8 children, died age 33 and he remarried the following year and they had 2 more children. I had heard that the 2nd marriage wasn't happy but he died 20 yrs later

So a chequered history. Have found other articles in relation to him being a member of St Mark's Darling Point bell ringers and petitioning to Council about various things

So can't say for sure it is him now. Might have to do a bit more digging to see if there is a 2nd John Gostelow (guess Sands might be a good place but pretty sure there has only been one I've seen previously)

Thanks for your interest - sorry to go on so - I might get started on a story about John and try to tie it all in! His life sounds sad and interesting
Cheers
Meegan

Rushcutters Bay Cemetery – Wesleyan section.

THESE two were buried in the one double plot, so very likely to be family members.

1867 August,
Arthur John GOSTELOW, aged 4 years 2 months, son of John.  (NSW BDM #3203, parents as John & Alice, died Paddington)

1878 June
Sarah GOSTELOW, aged 75 years, mother of Ebenezer of 345 Brougham St.  (NSW BDM #1079, died Darlinghurst)

http://www.bda-online.org.au/ - free indexes searching, nominal subscription, very good for penal and colonial NSW clues.

City of Sydney Assessment Books should be able to advance your quest …

http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/learn/search-our-collections/house-and-building-histories/assessment-books

Tenants and landlords are listed on those Rates books.

This link for City of Sydney is worthwhile having a look through, they have free to search Sands directories, photos, maps, etc …
