Trying to identify grandfather in 1918 platoon photo
« on: Thursday 18 May 17 22:13 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to identify my grandfather in a platoon photo taken in 1918. Unfortunately we don't have many photos of him remaining - one from 1940 and another from the 1960s. He was 25 in 1918 and a private in the RMLI. He always wore a moustache I believe...

Thank you in advance for any ideas you have,

Matt

Hi Matt,

The chap on the back row, third from the right looks like a possibility.

Regards

Sarah

Hi there,

I think he's on the front row, third from right! It's the same nose and long neck. I've attached a side-by-side comparison.

Hope that helps,

Mark

Thanks!

I didn't want to bias this by suggesting who I think it might be as I really don't know.

Mark's guess looks to be a lance corporal and I think our man was a private at that time. He was not terribly tall either - 5'9 his record suggests...

Thanks. Hopefully there will be some other ideas.

Matt

I agree with sarah.  The three faces all have a deepish half moon shape both sides under the cheek area (can't describe it any better, hope it makes sense!)

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

Thanks Max and Sarah,

Interestingly I noticed a possible wedding ring in this man. My grandfather married my grandmother in 1919 but very interestingly there was a wedding date in 1917 listed on his service record but no mention of any name other than my grandmother's... just wonder if the ring is a red herring?

Might account for the jaunty angle at which he wears his battle bowler!

I wondered about the man on the bottom right? Having said that I may be biased by your always wore a moustache comment! He looked to have quite deep wide set eyes!
Have to say I find these group military photos really difficult, there is something about a hat that seeks to totally confuse my brain.

My first reaction was man on middle of front row too .
But the one on far right of middle row also has those deep set eyes .

Modify.  * Sorry I wasn't looking at full pic ...I mean 5th one along

I would have ruled out the guy on back row as being too tall ...but it's hard to estimate the height of the ones who are sitting
