No you've been a big help! Ok, sorry i thought she had john and mary annes marriage cert but its johns original birth cert, so thats no help.  On Mary Annes birth cert - the informant - it says -  father John Dykes , under occupation it says 'Groom' ? (what would that mean)

Have you looked at death of this John DYKES.

In Victoria 1863 (5918), place not listed.  aged 45, makes him born c1818 though?!  Parents listed as John and Mary.  Place of birth noted as DEVO, as in Devonshire maybe!

A son, Andrew James DYKES was registered in 1864 but he could still be your John.  I wonder where he died!

Thats interesting, no i hadnt seen that one and really hadnt gone to far down the track of his death notice. It definitely said he was 28 on Mary Anns birth cert, (1858) and Devonshire as birth place. That is a coincidence about the DEVO on this one. I also wonder where he died, and had thought the Inglewood one was the most highly likely. All i know was he was dead by 1884 when she married.

Victoria, Electoral Roll 1856.

DYKES, John.  Place of above and occupation: Koroit, Labourer. Householder.
DYKES, Samuel. Place of abode and occupation: Belfast, Farmer.  Freehold.
DYKE, Samuel. Place of above and occupation: Belfast, Farmer.  Freehold.

Coincidence that your John DYKES also had a son named Samuel who was born at Tower Hill.  Maybe this Samuel is a relation.

A John DYKES Jnr also purchased land and the Warrnambool land sales in 1847.  There seems to be another John DYKES in Melbourne so its easy to confuse the two.

Possibly the Samuel DYKES on the Electoral Roll.... BUT there was also a Samuel in Fitzroy, Melbourne.

Death in the state of Victoria. Reg 1905 (12525). Samuel DYKES aged 82 at Fitzroy North.
Father: John DYKES
Mother: Mary ASHWORTH.

Looks like Samuel married Isabella PILKINGTON in 1856.

Also, re baby Samuel.

quote "Victoria Police Gazette, 18 May 1858

At Hilsboro' Farm, near Tower Hill, on the 1st instant, an inquest was held on the body of a child named Samuel Dykes, aged 18 months.  Verdict:- "Accidentally drowned" - 7th May, 1858" end quote.

EDIT: Samuel who died in 1905 was a Gentleman!  I found him born in Lancaster 1823.  His parents married in Lancaster 1822.

The inquest file at PROV has been digitised. So sad. A little insight into their lives.  Thinly populated area etc

Wow - thank you so much everyone for all you have found. Very sad about Samuel drowning and the other boy dying as well. I managed to download that document. Sadly there was child drownings in the next generations as well.
