1692 Merionethshire Bond Place name
« on: Saturday 20 May 17 08:56 BST (UK) »
Hi!

Here is an illegible (to me) snippet of a Bond downloaded from the University of Wales Wills.
I would like to know where where Hugh ap William Pugh is stated to come from... It would probably be around Bala or Kitalgarth Merionethshire...

Thanks, please help!

Hi
If you look at page 3 it's clear, '... of the Parish of Trawsfynydd...'.

As written above, David Roberts, gentleman, and Hugh ap William Pugh, yeoman, are both from Gwerneved in the county of Merioneth. John Davies, drover, is from Bala in the same county.

Maybe = Gwernyfed(?), but I'll leave its identification to the Welsh experts.

Hi
My reply refers to WILL of Hugh ap William Pugh of Merionethshire, dated 1692, not the BOND shown.

Hi, Family Search has Gwernefail as part of the parish of Llanycil.

"The ancient parish of Llanycil comprised seven townships namely Y Bala, Cyffdy, Bedwarien, Gwernefail, Maestran Is Mynydd, Maestran Uwch Mynydd and Streflyn.

Gwernefed might be Gwernefail??

I can't find the will of Hugh ap William Pugh dated 1692

The illegible snippet was from the will of Ellis Roberts 1692

This is all to do with Ellis ap William ap Hugh of Citalgarth and I am trying to find siblings who stayed in Wales, and didn't emigrate as Quakers

Thanks

Hi
It's page 2, not 3.

Hello Emyr and Bookbox

Thank you very much for your help!

I did find the will of Hugh ap William ap Hugh as identified by Emyr. He died June 2 1692. The snippet I originally sent was indeed from Ellis Roberts will who died in January 1692. So it seemed conceivable that Hugh signed the Roberts document and died a couple of months later. However, the signature of Hugh ap William ap Hugh is on the Bond (not the will) of Ellis Roberts dated 1693.

So they must be different people..

The Roberts family were mixed up with the Quakers of Citalgarth, and there are good records of them including Ellis ap William ap Hugh, see

This interests me because I share an unusual S27900 DNA haplotype with a descendent of Ellis ap William ap Hugh and maybe Hugh was a distant relative of mine!!

Many thanks again for your rapid replies and expertise

That looks convincing enough. The Bond with Hugh’s mark (not his signature) is dated 27 May 1693, so he can’t be the man who died 2 June 1692 and whose will was proved that year. Glad you sorted it.
