Munden family
« on: Sunday 21 May 17 13:13 BST (UK) »
Hello  :)

I am hoping someone may be able to help. I am currently working on a tree and am struggling with the Munden line. I have the attestation papers for William Munden who states he was born in the parish of Bothenhampton abt. 1839 (he may have lied about his age. His death in 1914 suggests he was born in 1844/1845). I believe he is the son of John Munden (b.1817. His parents were John Munden and Elizabeth Crocker) and Mary Warr (b.1812).

Any information at all on the Munden's would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

Have you found him on an early census to help with his age?

GRO Index has;
MUNDEN, WILLIAM, Mothers maiden name WARR****
GRO Reference: 1844  J Quarter in BRIDPORT  Volume 08  Page 37

I checked 1837-1846 and this is the only one in Dorset.

Trish :)

I noticed Trees dont have Williams Wife Mary's maiden name except one which has Sweeney

MUNDEN, EMMA  HANORAH, Mothers mn HENNIGAN****
GRO Reference: 1874  D Quarter in PORTSEA ISLAND  Volume 02B  Page 427

Annie Elizabeth 1878 has same Mothers mn

Looks to me they had a Child that may have died (there is a 6 year gap between Mary Jane and Henry on 1881 Census)

From Familysearch.Org;
HENRY Munden Birth 8 July 1870, Dublin, Ireland
Parents William MUNDEN and Mary HENNIGAN

From what I can see except for the 2 Royal Hospital Pensioner Records on Anc in all Census he is born 1844 Bridport.
I Record has birth place as Bothenhampton Bridport Dorset

Thanks for the replies,

Groom, I think I have him on the 1851 census in Burton Bradstock living with his parents and siblings where his birth year is given as 1845. I suspect he lied about his age when joining the army as the medical report at his enlistment states he is "very slight but will fill out".

SmallTownGirl, I have a copy of his service record. Unfortunately there isn't any information regarding his parents or siblings on it, however, it does give info about his marriage and children.

Trish1120, thanks for the info. Apparently William married Mary Hennigan whilst he was serving in Canada. They had 3 children born there, 1 in Ireland, 1 in the Channel Islands, 1 in Portsmouth, 2 in Kent and 1 in Lancaster.

I'm hoping someone might have some information which will help take the Munden's back a bit further. I think William had 5 siblings:
John James b.1842
Mary Jane b.1847 (can't find anything on her after 1861 when she is living at Allington)
Emma b.1850
Harry b.1850
Dan b.1855

Thanks again :)
