THOMAS HOUGHTON WIGAN
« on: Sunday 21 May 17 16:12 BST (UK) »
Can anyone find anymore information on Thomas Houghton born abt. 1825 in Wigan. He appears on the 1841 census age 15 son of John and Mary [ miss spelt Haughton] of Brock Mill Lane or Bridge but cannot find him on later census or any BMD for him.
Thanks

There is one who marries a Nancy **

1861

Thomas Houghton 37 born Wigan
Nancy 33
John 8
Alice 6
Jane 4
Sarah 1

** nope that one has father William Houghton not John although the 1841 census doesn't give relationships so he may not have been the son of John that is the assumption.

I would guess Thomas and brother John were not sons of John & Mary. From the 1841 census the next son William was described as the 1st son of John & Mary, Fanney 1st daughter

was Thomas actually Mary's son or John's from a previous marriage?

This is on the asumption that John (& Thomas) were spademakers

Thanks for the replies. I did wonder if John or Mary had been married before and Thomas was one of either parent's previous marriages.. John does come up on a birth and Christening in 1833, parents John and Mary a spade maker, so it does leave a question mark over Thomas. I also get the Baptisms for all the other children and it's John and Mary a Spade maker.
I have never found a marriage between John and Mary [ her previous name was Green, which comes from last son Richard's birth details]. I have been trying to unravel this for some years now, so if anyone has any more ideas. Thanks

I did wonder if the john1833 should have been James but he is also described as first son

Mary might also have been a widow when she married John. I wonder if richard's birth certificate would say ' son of John and Mary lately ??? Formerly Green' therefore giving a previous married name

On that 1841 census John and William are the same age which seems to indicate they were either stepbrothers or half brothers

Thanks again
According to the Parish records I see John Born in Aug 1833 and William born Dec 1826. I think they have rounded some of these ages up on the 1841 census. They don't give the relation to the head on the 1841 census so I am wondering if John was a relative living there or as you say a stepson.
I can't find John either on the 1851 census but brother William was a lodger in Yorkshire.
I have now sent for Richard's birth cert. to see if there is another name besides Green so maybe that will give me a lead.

Hello
Don't know if you have already sorted this but will post anyway in case.
From lanc opc . Thomas Myers b 1822 son of William Myers and Mary (formally Green).wigan
Marriage 1832 a John Houghton to Mary Mayors. Again at Wigan.
Thomas Myers is the next door neighbour to John on 1861 census and is a spade finisher.
