thanks, I've had a look at that 1880 US census, I don't think it's them, as Robert was born in Cornwall, England and Mary was born in Ireland, and their daughter Elizabeth had married Oscar Knorr in 1879.

Thanks for all the other finds, great genealogy at work. The death for Robert W Witham is also puzzling as I had Robert as a widower remarrying in 1883 in Liverpool - although Oscar D Knorr would have been his son-in-law , so perhaps I have been following the wrong Robert  back in Liverpool.

Here's the death record for Robert Witham - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JFS4-Z5M  The street address seems to match where Oscar D. Knorr was living in that time frame according to Philadelphia city directories.

Robert's occupation (watchman)  also matches that of Robert WILHAM in 1880.

Since Oscar appears to be at home and single in 1880 it makes you wonder if he and Elizabeth eloped to New Jersey and didn't tell their parents!

A big thanks for the info. It must be the same Robert then, as  his middle name was Williams, it was his mother's maiden name and also Elisabeth's middle name. And I think the Elizabeth on the 1880 US census might be Elizabeth's sister, Annie Eliza Withem, born 1859. Robert must have lost his job as a First Mate mariner and got a job as watchman. Good sleuthing, and its great there is a lot of newspaper articles on the family.

Based on Oscar Knorr listed as single and in parents' household in 1880 then it's more likely that the Elizabeth Withem in 1880 census is Oscar's wife-

Maybe this is Elizabeth's mother Mary's death?  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JX8S-WMW

The above details look more likely now- Elizabeth W. Knorr married 1894 Robinson-
