Tracing the places where my grandparents worked in service
« on: Monday 22 May 17 18:48 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have a marriage certificate stating that my grandparents got married in the registry office, Hanover Square.  They both worked in service, one as a butler and the other as a housemaid.  I can see the addresses where they worked but how can I find out who lived at these addresses and who they worked for?

I would be grateful of any help.

regards

Footie Wendy

Hi

Welcome to the forum. Searching Electoral Registers and Directories could help you find out more.

Welcome to Rootschat.

When did they get married? You could try looking for the addresses in census records.

I'd recommend searching Electoral Registers. I also had some luck looking at passenger lists too as families sometimes took maids with them on their holidays. One of my aunts regularly got to travel to USA and South Africa in the 1920's and 30's according to the records.

There is a slim chance that their employers were living at this address in 1911,so if you check the address for them in 1911 then you could search electoral registers for the years after as you have a name to look for as well as the address
