John Freeman
« on: Friday 26 May 17 13:18 BST (UK) »
I have a problem trying to find the death of John Freeman. I have sent for 2 Certs. Which are the wrong ones. His wife was Sarah and her last child Henry was born Dec. 25 1840 who was blind.  John Freeman was missing on the 1841 Census.  He married  Sarah Edmonds in 1834.  How can I find his death without another disappointment? He lived in Lambeth, Surrey in Vauxhall Walk. There were three children on the 1841 census. Thanks

John Freeman was a Lithographic Artist they were living in Vauxhall Walk in Lambeth. Margaret, John and Henry were the children listed on this census in 1841.

1841 Sarah 30, Margaret 5, John 1, and Henry 6mths are in Lambeth.
Just because John is not there it does not mean he had died by 1841.

1861 Sarah is widowed and a Ladys Nurse, Henry is with her.
Born c 1812 Lambeth.

This appears to be her in 1851, dowm as a Sister?
Thomas R Redhouse, 33
Eliza C Case, 36
John Poellchambers, 23
Sarah Freeman, 40, Sister, Widow, Nurse, born Vauxhall, Surrey
Infant Freeman, 3 Days, Neice, born Camberwell***
Anc has Sarah born Nawyhall but image is Vauxhall.

Birth Reg;
GRO Index
FREEMAN, EMILY,  Mothers mn EDMUNDS*****
GRO Reference: 1851  M Quarter in CAMBERWELL  Volume 04  Page 60

So either Emily is illeg or John died close to 1851.

You can search the GRO Index for Death Reg for John Freeman.
Its fairly new, you have to register, but free to search.
There are possible Death Regs for John c 1850 (if Emily is his Child)
Remember John may be older than Sarah.

Here is a possible;
FREEMAN, JOHN, age 49****

Many thanks. The two certs I have are for 1843 and 1844. Both Lambeth but not my John Freeman. The latest one arrived today, and was so disappointed.  So many John Freeman's.  I know Sarah moved around and was a wet nurse or similar for sone years and then died as a widow in 1876 in Trigon Road, Lambeth aged 64 registered by her sister Jane Trevisary.  The death cert. States her husband had been a Lithographic artist.  Thank you for your help. :-*

This could possibly be the one
March 1844 Wandsworth vol 4 page 428
Freeman, John
age 36

For those who haven't seen Pussywillow's other thread, Sarah Freeman, wd of Jno, was examined in Lambeth in 1844 (I think in July)
Living North fields Peckham, she produced her marriage cert (14 Jany 1834, Lambeth), named her three children and their ages, and said her husband had rented 105 Vauxhall Wk for 8 yrs.

According to Sarah her husband died 4 mos ago (think it says months, poor writing), at the County Lunatic Asylum
Image is available on ancestry in the London Poor Law records. Use Browse this collection and select
Lambeth/Lambeth/Settlement Papers/Rough Settlement Examinations 1844
Is image 251 of 319

So I think this must have been the asylum at Wandsworth (later Springfield Hospital)
