What great photos. I love the way they are much more casual than the usual Victorian  photos, such as the Edinburgh Ale photo and nursing a hangover!!

Wonderful photographs and I am looking forward to going to the exhibition. I would however take issue with the statement that "Hill never found another partner to replace his beloved Adamson" as Hill returned to photography in the early 1860s in collaboration with the Edinburgh photographer Alexander McGlashon. They exhibited in the London International exhibition which ran from 1st May to 1st September 1862 and produced some excellent portraits and group scenes - well worth checking out.

Very interesting photos.  I wonder how they got the people to stay still enough for the photos while still looking so relaxed.

Or was there another faster way ot taking photos?

Visited the exhibition today. The items on show are original prints, not modern digitised copies, and it is fascinating to see the originals of such famous photographs. This is an unmissable exhibition for anyone with an interest in early photography., and the development of photography as an art form.
What I would love to see now is a wider ranging exhibition on Octavius Hill showing not only his work with Adamson but also his paintings, his drawings and his later photographs with McGlashon.
