Eliza Gifford

http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/ostrich1854.shtml

She is recorded as with family on the ship aged 23 and a servant....

perhaps it is her brother George  that is family as he is only in his 30's...

Ostrich passenger list shows these with surname GIFFORD
Eliza 23,  and Helen 17, shown as single women with family on board plus George 31, and a wife for George - Ann 22, all from Kent.

Possibly the 1851 census entry for the two single women - Helen=Ellen?
At "cottage, Cliffs End", hamlet of Cliffs End, Thanet St Lawrence, Kent
John GIFFORD   56, ag lab, b Margate
Eleanor GIFFORD 57, b Sussex
Eliza GIFFORD 20, b Cliffs End
Ellen GIFFORD   14, b Ramsgate

Possible baptism for Eliza:
Eliza GIFFORD, 22 Aug 1830 at St. Lawrence, Kent, England
Parents: John Gifford, Eleanor

And this is possibly the marriage for George

Jun qr 1853, reg at Thanet, Vol 2a, p937
George GIFFORD
and on same page: Ann MCHUGH,
The image shows:
Marriage at St Laurence Thanet, April 25, 1853
George GIFFORD, bachelor, of full age, mariner, living at Cliffs End, father: John GIFFORD, labourer
Ann MCHUGH, spinster, of full age, living at Ramsgate, father: Abraham MCHUGH, gardener
Witnesses: William WHEATHEAD, Helen GIFFORD

Possible baptism for George, although father's name is different - possibly a mistake by the church clerk  :-\

12 May 1822 at St Laurence in Thanet
George, son of George and Eleanor GIFFORD, abode: St Laurence

There is also an entry in the records for Britain, Merchant Seamen, 1835-1857, dated 19 July, 1847
Ticket Register 208642,
George GIFFORD, b 7 April, 1822 at Cliffs End, age when ticketed: 25
5ft 8 inches, brown hair, gray (sic) eyes,
first went to sea as a boy in 1841
served in Royal Navy 4 years

There are a couple of voyages listed but I don't understand the way its recorded.  However there is a note: "CANCELLED, he left at Cape Town"; but there is no date for this note.

Witnesses: Richard MUMMERY, James DIXON

Possible baptism for John GIFFORD

John GIFFORD, son of Thomas and Sarah Mary

Many Many thanks everyone for taking the time to look at this family for me!  This all seems to add up together

Eliza first born daughter is named Eleanor Gifford Lawrence and she marries Andrew Lindsay whose home is where Eliza is recorded as dying!
