Just referred back to the newspaper story.

It mentions a Mr H Brown only.

The 'Clarke' reference is 'Mrs Clarke'. More promising.

OK things are suddenly looking good.

The 1911 census shows two good matches that will need to be cross-checked
(if you can, please help me with that).

* Ada Clarke born 1892 in the same house as a Walter Clarke, Fulham

* Ada Clarke born 1892 in the same house as a Thomas Clarke, Isle of Man

Ada Smith married a Walter Clarke in 1910/11
Ada Smith married a Thomas Clarke in 1910/11

Ena Clarke born 1915.

Agreed.

Just exploring options.

Perhaps the servant Ada Smith in 1911 is someone else?

I'm not able to see census right now.
Will have to get to library tomorrow.

In 1901 there are 3 Ada Smiths born Ramsgate who are still single

Ada G(ertrude) Smith bn 1877, parents Thomas & Rebecca

Ada Jane Offen Smith bn 1888 parents John & Catherine

Ada Smith age 9 (c1892) parents Burton & Phoebe.

Yep.

Case looks strong for the 1911 census single woman servant born 1892 working in Ramsgate named Ada Smith being our target, especially since there are no similar-aged alternatives in the area in 1901. Perhaps it is time to suspend work on the project until Ada's birth certificate arrives and then use that to find her in 1939.

Thanks, Rosie (and others)
