Help tracing ancesters in Salford
« on: Thursday 01 June 17 13:21 BST (UK) »
Hello

Can anybody help me with tracing some of my ancestors in Salford?  I am having trouble tracing my Great Grandmothers family.  Her name was Mary Ellen Atherton and she was born at 5 Ford Place, Ford Lane, Pendleton, Greengate, Salford on 22 February 1878. Her parents were William Atherton (Occupation Carter) and Ellen Crowder.  I have Mary Ellen's marriage details - she married my Great Grandfather Edward Welsh on 22 May 1897 at Christ Church Salford. Her Marriage Banns list her father, William Atherton, deceased.  I can trace her on the 1901 & 1911 census' but nothing earlier.  I have also managed to trace the England & Wales Civil Registration Index for William & Ellen dated Oct-Nov-Dec 1875 (Ellen is down at Crowther instead of Crowder).  There does appear to be a number of William & Ellen Athertons in Lancashire (Liverpool, Wigan, Preston) but I don't think these are mine.  I also can't trace details of when they died. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Hello

Thank you so much for your replies.

Elizabeth Welsh and John William Dayson were witnesses, Elizabeth Welsh was  my Great Grandfather Edward Welsh's sister and her husband to be was John William Dayson, they married in 1901.

'Hi I can locate one other possible birth registration a William Atherton December qtr 1882 Salford 8d 174 mmn CROWTHER'

So this could be a brother to Mary Ellen?

Are some of the census records for Salford, namely 1891, 1881,1871 & 1861 missing? Is this why I cannot trace them or am I looking in the wrong place!!?

Some are missing or have been badly transcribed. I would play about with the spellings.

Mary :)
