Manchester pubs 1870/85
« on: Thursday 01 June 17 17:59 BST (UK) »
Hello, my Grandfather is listed from 1873 and over about the next 10 years as a beer retailer yet on the 1881 census his address is under that of a pub.  Did publicans or beerhouse owners at that time ever call themselves a beer retailer or could it have been a shop close to the pub and named after it. Thanks for any help.

Thank you so much for the information it has helped me understand. Having been told my Grandfather ran a pub in the 1800s when I discovered he applied for an off-licence in 1873 I started having doubts thinking it may have been a shop instead.  Now I see that it may have been a pub as I thought but  needing to have a licence to sell takeaway alchohol also.  Thanks
