Deaths in Bermondsey Workhouse 1862
« on: Monday 05 June 17 10:13 BST (UK) »
Hi. Mary Ann (Marianne) Hepburn nee Storie/Story died in the Bermondsey workhouse on the 12th of March 1862. She was married to the Arctic explorer John Hepburn who travelled with Sir John Franklin. John Hepburn travelled the world and Mary Ann stayed at home in Scotland but she died in London (on the death certificate she was just called Ann). During their 35 year marriage they must only have been in the same country for a couple of years and he had left for South Africa in 1856 where he died in 1861. I am trying to find out where Ann was buried and anything else that I can about her. Does anyone know if there are records for the workhouse and if so where I can find them. I am in London in a couple of weeks and so if they are in an archive I might be able to go and see them. Thank you

www.workhouses.org.uk has this to say of Bermondsey:

Records

Note: many repositories impose a closure period of up to 100 years for records identifying individuals.

The Ancestry website has two collections of London workhouse records:
The London Workhouse Admission and Discharge Records (1738-1930) are searchable by name.
The Poor Law and Board of Guardian Records, 1430-1930 are more extensive but only provide browsable page images.
The FindMyPast website has workhouse / poor law records for Westminster.
London Metropolitan Archives, 40 Northampton Road, London EC1R OHB. Holdings for Tanner Street workhouse include: Births (1836-68); Deaths (1836-70, 1877-1914, 1916-20). Other holdings include: Guardians' minute books (1836-1870, 1904-30); Financial records (1836-1930); Staff records (1866-1930); etc.

Thank you KGarrad that's great, I will start with all of this, it must turn something up.
Louisa, she is called Ann Hepburn 'widow of Hepburn a sailor' and the witness is the mark of Catherine Gronin who I have assumed is the matron. If it wasn't for a brief line in a Scottish newspaper I wouldn't have known it was her.

This is incredible, I have a sub but for some reason have never found this - brilliant. It says that she was 'taken out by her friends' so much more to find out.

Thank you

Sorry, me again. I have found that the Bermondsey graveyard shut in 1854 so please can anyone suggest some graveyards that I can start researching.
Thanks
Alison

Have you checked for a burial at Whitekirk?

A brilliantly simple thought but as it happens she is not in Whitekirk. I have the book of Monumental Inscriptions and I have just looked through it. I hadn't even thought about that.
