Hi Sue

Here is a link to the Probate record of Mary Ann RATT (sometimes spelled as RAITT), widow of Edward.

It confirms that she had an adopted daughter named in her will (along with her other daughters) as Mary Jane TAYLOR.

There was also a Probate file for Edward RATT.

It was however dated 1890 - some time before the family came to New Zealand and sometime before the birth of the adopted daughter Mary Jane TAYLOR.   Have included it here because the Will of Edward RATT is referred to in the Probate file for Mary Ann RATT.

The 1901 England census shows that the child Mary J. TAYLOR - 3 years - is a visitor in the household of Edward RAITT (sic) :

Her birth place is given as Hartlepool, Durham.

Possibly this birth at Free BDM ??

Births - MAR - 1898

TAYLOR - Mary Jane
Registered :  Hartlepool

Wow this is incredible!!!!

Your all so kind.

Now if he came back to England sometime before finally settling in New Zealand well I have my man.

He's no relation to me or my family but a soldier I need to identify.

Hi Lu

Nothing that isn't on here.

I found his marriage to Louisa.......and then the family disappeared.

General search through World Wide Findmypast brought them up in New Zealand.

There is a picture with his name on the back.  The uniform is Durham Light Infantry, but no records exist of his movement.  The cap badge is only relevant to a certain time after 1902 but before 1920's

All details fit your Fredric Ernest Whiteley .............just the mystery of an old photo.

Hi Sue

I'm struggling a bit to understand how you've been able to "arrive at" the Frederic Ernest WHITELEY who came to New Zealand in 1903 ??

*  Does the photo you have of the "soldier" (man in army uniform), give the full name of the above  F. E. WHITELEY ?  (And maybe the correct spelling of "Frederic" ? )

*  If there are no records (I'm assuming you mean army records ?), then how can you link back to the man marrying Louisa in 1903 ?
