From Easton, Lincolnshire to Hanham, South Gloucestershire
« on: Wednesday 14 June 17 15:31 BST (UK) »
Local history heads needed  :-* :-*

There are two stones lying on their sides in a field in Hanham, South Gloucestershire.  They refer to stones laid on Tuesday 7 July 1874 by Mitchell Esq JP and McArthur Esq MP.  The stones are covered in moss and some of the face has split away.  Eventually the trail has led to a stone laying ceremony for the new Wesleyan Chapel at Easton, Lincolnshire.  It seems that Messrs Mitchell and McArthur were also strong supporters of the temperance movement.  I have found a newspaper article in the Stamford Mercury for 10 July 1874 with more about the event.  I'm assuming Easton on the Hill  ???

Does anyone know what became of the building?  How on earth have the stones become stranded on the other side of the country?

How odd. It would appear that the Chapel is no more. The Chapel closed in 1986.
Maybe someone bought the rubble & transported it to there.
Is the field north or south of the river ?

They are on the north side of the Avon, in a field with a footpath next to the Gate House, once part of the Hanham Court estate.  Quarrying was big business nearby, but of the local pennant stone.  The contractors for the new chapel were Messrs Perkins & Sons, of Easton

If I've got the right village, it's very picturesque, and would have expected such stones to be kept and re-used for any new building on the site.  They are corner-stones.

As we're talking after 1986 I doubt the stones would have been re-used except for renovation work on similar buildings or foundations.
Maybe the Gate House benefited from it & these were left over.
