World War 1 Casualty List Look Up
« on: Friday 16 June 17 12:52 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone who could look up the casualty lists for my great grandfather Michael Brett born 1877 Batley Yorkshire . He died in Sunderland on 10th April 1940 from a cerebral haemorrhage. There was a newspaper announcement of  an inquest on the 14th April but no details other than that he served in The Great War. I have never been able to find any service records.
Today, I noticed that Find My Past must have added to their newspaper archive as there is now another newpaper announcement that he had been in hospital prior to his death suffering from the effects of wounds from the 'last war'.

There are two records online for a M Brett one in 1915 and the other in 1916. I would be so grateful if someone could look for me to either confirm it's him or eliminate. If it is then I am hoping it includes his service number etc.

I placed a similar request for my grandfather a while ago. I had a phenonemal response and I was so lucky that someone actually recognised his unusual name as he had served with his grandfather in the same draft. He helped me enormously.
I know I can rely on the wonderful people of Rootschat.

So you must know his Regt then ?

Looking at the SWB Rolls for men invalided out there are 2 Michael Brett's.
A/Cpl. 390498 662 Coy. Lab.Corps.
Received the 15 Star for service overseas with the 8/Royal Munster Fusiliers no. 3820.
He was invalided out due to sickness in 1918 aged 38. Age is a bit out & he may not of course been invalided out but gone back to his Regt. so won't appear on the Roll.
It could also be he was wounded & went into the Lab. Corps later which was a common route for injured men.

Not him born Tralee.
The other one is Pte. 30235 2/Garrison Batt. Suffolks. Discharged due to debility no age given.

Not able to look up as requested but for elimination there is at least one other 8142 Private (Sergeant later) Michael Brett 2nd Battalion Leinster Regiment brought back wounded to a Devon hospital from France in 1914 (newspaper report - no details).  At least three Michael Bretts received Silver War badges: 30235 Michael Brett Suffolk Regiment and 3820 later 390498 Michael Brett Munsters then Labour Corps and 288112 Pnr Michael Brett Royal Engineers but not from wounding.  Another SWB recipient served in the RAF with number 139850 having transferred from an unnamed unit.

Not directly helpful perhaps but as said, to help eliminate (or not) as your search progresses.

Just seen jim's post, the RE and the RAF man do not appear on SWB transcribed lists but found by other routes.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

390498 can be ruled out as born Co.Cork.

Thanks for the input.
The records were casualty list. No I don't know his regiment. Only that he served in The Great War.
I made an error with date of death it was May not April but that is irrelevant.
I think his service records musnt have survived so I am looking for any clue. He died 22 years after the end of the war so must have had serious wounds to be still suffering the effects. I was hoping to find a discharge record or something.
He worked as a stonemason and j assumed his death may have been due to some sort of accident for there to be an inquest.

My only advice would be to try & find him on the Absent Voter's List 1918 if you know where he lived at that time.
This will give number & Regt.
This is assuming he was still serving in 1918.
Another source are local newspapers as they often mentioned wounded men.

Hi Jim
Thanks for that. I will look into it. I am sure something will turn up. I've done it before with my grandad. Nobody in the family knew but a stranger did. Ok appreciate your response.
