John Woodley m Caroline Eliza Anthony q1 1858 Greenwich, 1d 621
« on: Monday 19 June 17 07:38 BST (UK) »
Before I throw money to the GRO, I'd like to be less unsure, so, can anyone find a birth/baptismal/banns record for this John Woodley, please? I think it's possible he may be a son of Captain William Woodley (RN) and Mary Mobbs. There are birth/baptism records for other children of Wm & Mary, but I can't find anything for John. There are 1841, 1851 & 1861 census records for this family; in the 1861 John Woodby/Woodley aged 26/36 appears to be married but not with Caroline & her 2 children who at time of 1861 census are domiciled with her father, Henry E Anthony. There is a death record for a John Woodley, 26, q4 1863, Lewisham, 1d 505 and Caroline (Widow) marries a Henry French, 11/9/1864 Plumstead. There is another John Woodley death record in q3 1865, Greenwich 1d 430....but that would render Caroline a bigamist, wouldn't it?

The John Woodley who died in Greenwich in 1865 was aged 29.

The marriage does not seem to have been a C of E one so it looks unlikely you will find it online.  Even if you were to find a birth record for a John Woodley, I'm not sure how you would know he was the one who went on to marry Caroline without the paternal details from the marriage certificate?

If John Woodley is the one died 1863 aged 26 i.e. bc.1837 I don't see how he could be the son of William and Mary whose son was bc.1834/1835.

I really don't think you can second guess this - you need the marriage certificate to confirm his fathers details/occupation, plus John's own occupation.

Thanks to all for swift responses today. It's looking promising as far as 1863 death/burial Plumstead records indicate. It may prove sufficiently intriguing to burn some cash after all, but I'll wait a bit to give anybody else an opportunity to plug this gap. Scottish records of that period are so much more expansive...
