Agreed! There's an "Ann Bray" mentioned with "Ambrose Bray" in an 1850 Aussie newspaper article entitled  "Inward passengers".

The GRO has the death registration -

John Bray, age 50, Reg. District Redruth, March Qtr 1838, 09  151

Redruth covers Gwennap.

Could explain John's absence on 1841 Census?

In 1841 Elizabeth has an occupation, usually (but not always) occupations listed for single woman and widows, not for a married woman whose husband was away from home on census night

So if Ann was Ambrose's wife, the marriage to Grace is wrong one, or Grace died and he married an Ann before emigrating.

Only just spotted your finding the birth of Emily Maria Rogers - mmn Bray.

There's a GRO marriage registration, 1838, for a Henry Rogers (Reg Dists 1. Redruth 2. Truro). On the same page Elizabeth Bray.

The marriage notice in the Royal Cornwall Gazette, 25 Oct 1850 (marriage in Adelaide) mentions -
"Joshua Payne, second son of the late George Payne, Esq, of Elm Grove, Peckham .... Lavinia Carter Bray, third daughter of the late Captain John Bray of Camborne Cornwall"

Has anyone found anything about Joshua yet?
We know he was the second son of a George Payne who was deceased by the time of the marriage in April 1850. The Australian papers say george was of Christchurch London, the Cornish paper gives his former address as Elm Grove Peckham. Peckham was in reg district of Camberwell and in ecclesiastical parish of Christchurch - so there my not be such an anomaly with address.
The only death of an adult George between 1837 and 1850 registered in camberwell district is in 1844, this George was 71, seems a bit old unless Joshua was quite a bit older than Lavinia.

Yes that was the only likely couple I found as well, but not found a marriage record anywhere to confirm.
