Samuel Valentine & Elizabeth Marson
« on: Thursday 22 June 17 16:39 BST (UK) »
Marriage took place 15th September 1824 St Leonards, Shoreditch, Mddx.
Samuel was a widower and Elizabeth was a widow in 1824 when they married.
Can anyone help with finding her maiden name?

Can't find her anywhere.  I wonder if the Marson name has been spelt wrong.
Samuel and Elizabeth both seem to disappear after the second daughters birth Mercy Valentine born 8 Dec. 1828 living in Goswell St, St Andrew, Holborn.  Samuel is a carman in 1828.

Their first child, my ancestor Emma Valentine, was born, Saint Sepulchre baptised 8 Sept. 1825.

I can follow Mercy and Emma through to their respective marriages, but I cannot find a thing about Samuel and Elizabeth after 1828.

There is some conflicting information I have found
there is a baptism Mercy daughter of Samuel & Elizabeth Valentine at St Lukes Old St born 18 Jan 1829 baptised 12 Mar 1829

also
Baptism Mercy daughter of Samuel & Elizabeth Valentine born 2 Jan 1829 baptised 1 mar 1829 St Andrew Holborn
address Goswell St
father's occ Carman

then

Marriage 3 May 1851 St John Hackney
William White widower full age occ Carver Church St father William White occ looking glass manufacturer
Mercy Valentine spinster full age  father Samuel Valentine occ Carman (deceased not entered)
witnesses George Miller (signed) Emma Miller (made mark)

William White signed and mercy made her mark

so I assumed Emma Valentine had married George Miller

I did find a marriage Christchurch with St mary & St Stephen
5 Dec 1848
George Miller bachelor full age ornamental ?????? 61 Brick Lane father Henry Marsden Miller occ Builder
Emma Valentine spinster full age 61 Brick Lane father Henry Valentine occ farmer
witnesses Elizabeth (looks like) Chamberlain and Jonathan Root

so who did Mercy's sister Emma marry???

Yes, it does state on the marriage certificate that 'Henry Valentine' was her father.  But I think that was a transcription mistake, or was she trying to hide something?

Emma and Mercy Valentine are definitely sisters, as I have been linked via DNA.

But it does have me absolutely perplexed why Samuel Valentine seems to disappear after 1829,
also Elizabeth (Marson - previous married name, I guess).

Samuel was a carman and Henry was a farmer - 2 completely different occupations.  I have a feeling that your ancestor Emma was perhaps a cousin of Mercy and not her sister.

Perhaps Samuel and Henry were brothers??

Interesting tks.

I did do a bit of digging earlier and found that Samuel Valentine was born 10 Feb. 1781 in Hitchin, Herfordshire.  He had brothers John 1785; Joseph 1790; David 1783; Sarah 1777; Elizabeth 1779 and Benjamin 1790 died age 1 yr old.
His father was David Valentine and mother Mary Dixon.  The family were dissenting Protestants from Herts.  There was huge trouble around this time; maybe Samuel decided to leave amd get out of it; however, Mary and him did have children:-
Mary 1811
Eliz   1815
Sarah 1808
Joseph 1817
John 1805
Deborah 1820 died 1821
It seems that when Samuel's wife died (Mary Izzard) July 1821 he moved south to London.  Who looked after the children, heavens knows.
Was Samuel hiding his earlier years?

There doesn't seem to be any Henry's in the family that I have found yet.
