"Petya" attacks - be vigilant.
« on: Thursday 29 June 17 08:40 BST (UK) »
Hello.

A warning being circulated among NZ businesses. We are not immune. Be vigilant with incoming emails.

QUOTE "As some of you are probably aware, yesterday there was an increased awareness of a cyber virus known as ‘Petya’, a type of file encryption virus, that affected a large number of countries and organisations around the world. The best defence against any of these attacks is your own awareness and vigilance of anything that looks vaguely suspicious. So we ask that you please remain vigilant when opening unexpected emails. If you are in doubt send them to hello[at]vo2.co.nz for review or simply delete them."
END OF QUOTE.

A great pity as most of our genealogy research relies on a free exchange of information, conducted in good faith, with complete strangers around the world.

Best practice is to start your 'off public forum' dialogue using the Rootschat PRIVATE MESSAGE service, with it's inbuilt protections, and be very selective who you give personal email address to, if wishing to exchange large data and image files.

PS. When I posted this advisory received, I was under the impression that the email address supplied, was to a unit within the renowned Waikato University IT research division, but have now discovered that it is a proprietary collective of North Island IT specialists.
