If you use a web browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox or similar) to access your email then it doesn't get downloaded to your computer. It will be M*t's servers that are getting clogged with all your spam - don't worry about it.
If you ever accidentally open one of these junk emails don't click any "click here to unsubscribe" links, their purpose isn't to unsubscribe you (think about it, did you subscribe in the first place?) but to verify that your email address is "live" and so they can sell it on and continue to bombard you with even more spam.
Regarding Hotmail/Windows live mail, if you feel so inclined there is a "block" button that you can use for email that ends up in the junk email folder, you don't need to click them one at a time, if you hover the mouse to the left of the "Junk Email" title when viewing the folder you'll see a "select all" check box appear.
If you want to zap them from your inbox if you click the drop-down alongside "junk" there's a "phishing scam" link.
I wasn't convinced this would make a difference when I first started policing an elderly relative's email account but it does seem to work. That and scanning his computer for viruses and spyware (and removing the several hundred nasties the scans found!).
Consider carefully whether you really want to give up this email address. Are you absolutely certain that all of the people you WANT to hear from have an alternative way of contacting you? And bear in mind that if you change the email address you use for online banking/shopping, the companies involved sometimes send a confirmation email to the old address to check that it's really you and not a scammer trying a bit of identity theft.
I think if a hotmail account doesn't get used for a prolonged period it gets forcibly closed but if you want to pre-empt this, google "close hotmail account" and there's a microsoft support link fairly near the top of the list.
