RAF abbreviations ww2
« on: Monday 03 July 17 17:05 BST (UK) »
I am trying to decipher an entry in an address book which gives the name and service number of an airman then:

LAC. No15 M.U. HGTH (or maybe H9TH?) Wroughton near Swindon.

I know that RAF Wroughton was an RAF airfield opened in 1940, but can anyone tell me what the rest means  please?

MU - Maintenance unit

Not sure about HGTH, but I'm sure someone will  :)

What date is the entry in the address book? RAF Wroughton was also a military hospital.

Hospital at RAF Wroughton opened in 1941 and closed in the 1990s because of defence cuts.

It was near RAF Lyneham so many casavacs went to Lyneham and sent on to Wroughton starting in WW2.

Looks like he was at a maintenance unit on the camp of Wroughton.

Thank you JJen and medpat. That's really helpful.

JJen There is no date in the address book, but a photograph indicates that this was sometime between 1942 and July '43.

If anyone can enlighten me about HGTH or H9TH (maybe even H9th) that would be great

Bit of a guess -

As it's an address perhaps the H9th is reference to a hut that the person would be billeted in - 9th Hut.
