Bishops Transcripts
« on: Wednesday 05 July 17 14:37 BST (UK) »
I have been trying to trace my gr gr grandmother via the marriage records of my great grandfather in 1886.
I have the civil certificate, but no of course no mothers name is given, only the father.
I have tried to obtain the Catholic Parish record of the marriage but have been advised  "Record not survived".
A friend has suggested I try the Bishops Transcripts.
Does anyone know how I can go about this, or can someone look for me?
Details as follows:
Marriage of Charles Maughan and Maria Geen Davies on 08/05/1886
At Church of Immaculate Conception, Spinkhill, Eckington (Chesterfield, Derbyshire)

Are there Catholic Bishop Transcripts?

A Google search with that question didn't produce useful results

I don't think there are BTs for Catholic marriages, and if the parish records don't exist, then you will have to purchase the marriage certificate from GRO.

Added - I also think that 1886 would be too late for BTs anyway, they tended to fade away after 1837.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

Hi,

There are a couple of family trees on other sites which state that Charles was born in County Mayo, Ireland and none give parents' names.  I think you might have difficulty in finding any records further back.
CONWAY, Westport, Mayo; TEALE, Salford, Manchester; GILCHRIST, Edinburgh; GRIFFITHS, East Stonehouse, Devon / Cardiff; VENNEN (and variations) Cornwall; TOY, Cornwall; ENGLAND, Cromer/Northrepps, Norfolk; LOFTUS, Cissie and Marie, Music Hall Artistes, Glasgow; PORTSWORTHY, Cornwall; SARCHFIELD, Manchester/Southport

I have the fathers name, Anthony Maughan, farmer (my gr gr grandfather).
And I know they were from Ballina, Co Mayo, and have found lots of Irish records for Anthony Maughan and Charles Maughan, but without the mother's name I'm unable to verify which, if any, are my ancestors.
Of course the GRO marriage certificate doesn't give the mothers name, and the witnesses are both related to my great grandmother, not to Charles.
Looks like Ive hit a brick wall.

Same here.  Mine are from Westport so I know the frustration of not being able to get any further!
