Jim1 - I'm away at the moment but will post photos of the backs in two weeks when home. 

I like the suggestions that (1) aspects of her outfit maybe that of a nurse, or (2) that she looks like a teacher / future headmistress. 

Also Treetotal's point that Ella could be short for Isabella (among other things). I'd thought only of Eleanor.

Her picture is there in William Augustus Brown's photo collection but I may never know why.

The Mary E Read born 1878, is listed as a retired teacher living in Sussex found on the 1939 register using the free search.
