What version of Firefox do you have -
to find this
1. click on the three bars in top right corner &
2. then on the question mark at the bottom of the new menu and
3. then "About Firefox"

It says Firefox ESR52.2.1 (32 bit). As I've said before to my shame, most of it means nothing to me, but that '32 bit' alarmed me because I know my Vista premium is 64 bit. Could this be the problem, but, if so, why is it only just making itself known?

Mine also says 32 bit and yet I know my computer is a 64 too.

The 52.2.1 worries me as mine is 54.0.1 and underneath that it says  "firefox is up to date."

I usually go in Help at the top of the page and then About Firefox and it updates automatically.

Hi Carol,

It says underneath that mine is up to date as well. Perhaps somewhere along the line I didn't update to a newer version of Firefox? I wonder if it would make a difference if I did? Knowing my current luck, it would probably self destruct in 5 seconds!!

How much memory is free?

If you go Ctrl+Alt+Del (Task master) what processes are running?

never been in there before! Lots and lots is the answer - too many to list. Is that bad?

Can you scroll through them, see which are not running properly?

How much memory is free?

I went into Computer and it says: ACER (C) 37.5GB of 139GB free  DATA(F) 133GB of 139GB free.

If you go Ctrl+Alt+Del (Task master) what processes are running?

never been in there before! Lots and lots is the answer - too many to list. Is that bad?

Click on the column marked CPU.
What is the percentage showing against Firefox?

if it is showing something like 50%, then you need to stop Firefox.
Highlight Firefox and click on End Process.

Wait until Firefox is no longer showing in the list. then start it again.
When you reload Firefox, it should be better - and will try to restore all your screens ;D

Mine is 52.2.1 as well. I think it's the last update from Firefox for those of us with older computers

Your computer is running Vista 64 - this is the 64bit version of the operating system - the main difference between 64 bit & 32 bit systems is the amount of memory they can access. 64 bit systems will quite happily run 32 bit programs, so no need to worry on that score.

The version of Firefox you are running is an ESR version (ESR stands for Extended Support Release) and 52.1 is I believe the latest version of that (Firefox on Windows 10 is now at Version 54). Older systems like Vista were automatically switched by Firefox earlier this year - although Firefox will continue to support Vista through these ESR releases this is only scheduled to continue until early 2018.

It may be better to download a fresh version from Mozilla at
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/faq/
and once that is done, uninstall the current one and then install the new version

Carol

The switch to ESR versions was for XP & Vista - Windows 7 is still scheduled to be supported for a while by the main line of Firefox.

Thanks KGarrad. The whole thing is constantly moving but as far as I can see I have 2 Firefox.exe *32 in the list. There's no indication of a percentage figure but the CPU column you mention has one of the entries jumping between 01, 02 and 03. The other jumps between 07, 08, 09, 10 and 11. What do I make of that? Is the free memory capacity okay?

if it is showing something like 50%, then you need to stop Firefox.
Highlight Firefox and click on End Process.
