There was a Will for Annie MARSHALL who died in October 1902.   
[Somewhat oddly, Archives New Zealand has indexed her Probate file as "Annie MARSHALL - widow"      ]

The contents of the file reveal however that the annexed Will is that of "Annie MARSHALL, late of Westport, wife of John MARSHALL, Builder, of the same place".
Unfortunately though, no really helpful information contained.

PS. It would appear that John did not subscribe to the edition containing WESTPORT material, so there is no personal family bio material supplied by the MARSHALLS. Nor when and how he arrived in NZ.

Again a huge thanks to everyone. I am still trying to work through all the leads (and the photo as requested!). One of the most interesting leads is actually the death of sister Margaret Straton - a quick DNA search showed that I was related to a descendant of her, and he has mapped out her tree in a lot of detail, although missing out John Marshall in the sibling list (he seems to be there in the family alongside Margaret, if I look him up on Scotlandspeople, so no big deal).

As a side issue, one of John Marshall's sons is undoubtedly my great grandfather, but I assume I must play a waiting game now, to see if any descendants of my great grandfather are DNA tested. I see that a second cousin descended from my great grandmother gives a reading of 158 centimorgans, but potential second cousin descendents of John Marshall's son Walter Lyndsey are only giving readings of 40-50. I assume this means I can rule him out for example. Has anyone experience of this kind of tracking?
