Some libraries have free F M P access as does TNA at Kew.   It is sometimes worth saving up a few 1939 lookups to be done on one visit

Elephant in the room - English death certificates didn't show dates of birth in the 1940s!  I think they started to do so in about 1969, and before that they only showed the age in years as stated by the informant (who didn't always know for sure).

Not much help I'm afraid, but didn't want you to get your hopes up.
