how to find armed forces history

good afternoon
i am trying to find my grandads and his fathers armed forces history i was wondering if anyone can help

You haven't said whether it's WW1 or WW2 records - or both.

it would be word war two for his father and for him he was in the malaysian war and was in the cheshire regiment

The same process applies to service after WW2 (the son) assuming he is deceased (if he isn't he applies for his own record).  Don't worry if you don't have the service number despite what the top level document says.
