I have a pewter mug awarded to Sergeant Major Haddon ( my ancestors family name was Hadden). it states :-
First Gloucestershire Artillery Corps
Prize
for the best gun detachment
 Serg Major Haddon
No. 1 B Battery
1863
The family were from Bristol .
I would be grateful for any information. Thank you

I'd suggest it was the volunteer unit properly known as the Gloucestershire Volunteer Artillery
see http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/media/2038/sourcesformilitaryhistory-11841.pdf.  As a non-regular army unit, its records are not held by MOD, the reference has info on records.  Their HQ was at Whiteladies Road Bristol

No1 B Battery indicates that he was a gun number one (in charge of a gun and its detachment, in B battery of the unit.

Looking in contemporaneous Bristol newspapers, there are many mentions of Sergeant/Sergeant Major Hadden of the Bristol Artillery. A couple give his initial as "J".

I have  a Joseph Hadden ( 1829 - 1887) on my tree but discounted him as Sergeant / S  Major as he was a commercial traveller on both 1861 and 1871 census . However, if he was attached to a Volunteer unit he could be the person!
Thank you maxD and ShaunJ , you have both been very helpful.
