FreeBMD (.org.uk) shows 37 deaths for a James Smith in Gloucestershire, between those dates.

Knowing his age may help?

Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
Have never been able to find James Smith (Corkcutter) on the 1851 or 1861 census's.
James was alive in 1863 but had died by 1867.
Not sure when he was born or when he married Ann.
Their two children Ann and William were both baptized at St. John Baptist Gloucester City U.K.
in 1817 and 1820 respectively. James is shown on both records as a Corkcutter.

What evidence do you have to say he was alive in 1863 but had died by 1867?

Making the assumption that James lived in Gloucester there is this death:-

SMITH, JAMES       73
GRO Reference: 1866  J Quarter in GLOUCESTER  Volume 06A  Page 176

This gives a birth year of c1793 making him about 24 when his child Ann was baptised in 1817.
