Which Foreign Port (1618)?
« on: Friday 21 July 17 22:07 BST (UK) »
The last word on the first line should be the name of a port and follow "versus". It is repeated on the last line as well. The home port of the first ship is Dieppe so could be a French port - any suggestions?

No answer yet, but could it be S (for South?) or St (for Saint?) + E... ?

Some 40 years too late, but the Calendar of State Papers has several entries such as this (1657) ...

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/cal-state-papers/colonial/america-west-indies/vol1/pp459-460
Oct. 15.   Similar Order. Warrant to be renewed for Jas. Desenne, master of the Bonaventure, of Dieppe, to trade to Jamaica. [Ibid., p. 218.]

So maybe further afield than France?

I think that the S is part of "versus" but the next word is not an upper case "e" - this clerk's capital E's are quite distinctive.

You are right in that it could be any port outside of England and Wales.

Imagine how pleased I was to find that the entry is also recorded in the book recording the extra duty paid by alien merchants - and how disappointed to read the entry! I'm not sure this helps at all! The last word on the last line looks like Rue.
