Elizabeth BISS born Frome ca 1781
« on: Wednesday 26 July 17 15:22 BST (UK) »
Elizabeth BISS married Thomas Witcomb in Frome in 1802, both described as OTP
The 1851 census has her place of birth as Frome (then living with her youngest son in Stepney) and gives a year of birth of 1781.

However, neither Freereg nor FreeBMD provide any plausible baptisms. Does anyone have a BISS family in the Frome area to whom she might be connected?

Spellings varied so often in those days, it's always worth trying searching with the Soundex option if your first attempt fails.

FreeREG has Elizabeth BISSE baptised at Frome in 1781, daughter of Hiram and Martha.

Thanks for that. I thought the search would have picked up that one!

Hello Petros,

This site has many references to the Biss/Bisse families in that area:

http://www.fromeresearch.org.uk/

You can search the site using the name Bisse, or Biss. There were 84 hits for this name.

I found the name of Hiram Biss came up and he was on the Heads of Household in the 1785 survey of Frome. "Biss Hiram Shoemaker Bridewell Barton". He was buried in Frome St John in September 1796.

They seem to have been a prominent family in Frome.

Jo

The Frome Research site has long been useful for identifying families in that area although until I knew Hiram's name I was unaware of the 1785 census.

That shows Hiram was the male in a household with 4 woman, evidently his wife Martha, daughters Elizabeth and Marta and an unknown lady
