Hi Rosie

If Charles Hollis aged 15 years is the person you are looking for Findmypast has a wealth of information on him down to the designs of his tattoos.

Hi Rosie

I am glad I guessed the right person. While on Findmypast check out the following issues of the Nottinghamshire Guardian newspaper : 7 Nov 1850, 25 April 1851 and 16 Oct 1851 which charts Charles Hollis' path into crime. Having being sentenced to 7 years transportation he was sent to Millbank Prison, Pimlico which was a holding facility for convicted prisoners before they were sent to Australia. Luckily whilst he was in Millbank the 1853 Penal Servitude Act was passed which abolished transportation for sentences of less than 14 years. You will notice that on the register which discharges Charles in 1855 the two prisoners above him, who were serving life sentences, were transported to Adelaide.

It would be interesting to know what happened to him after leaving prison. Did he go straight?
