Carroll Mystery
« on: Wednesday 02 August 17 15:37 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can anybody find these people in 1911?

Catherine Carroll born possibly in Sunderland in 1885 (19th April 1885 mmn Carroll)
Catherine had two illegitimate children - James, born on the 31st August 1906 and Frances, born on the 2nd November 1909.

Neither Catherine nor her children can be located on the 1911 census, although the family did remain in Sunderland.
Nor can Catherine be found on the 1891 or 1901 census?

Can anyone help?

Thanks
Sue

Hi Sue,

Unfortunately we are not allowed to conduct 1911 look ups (RootsChat policy)

You have Catherine's d of b, therefore do you have her bc with her mother's name and address?

Hi

No don't have Catherine's birth certificate, but checked via Sunderland Registrars, and that one seemed the most likely.
We are also, probably wrongly, assuming that her parents may have been James and Frances because of how she named her children.

She married Charles Leighton in 1919 in Sunderland, but died in the 1920's.

Cheers

Sue

There's this death?

June qtr 1924
Sunderland Registration District     vol 10a, page 664

Leighton, Catherine       age 39
(from FreeBMD)

That puts her birth around 1884-1886?

This could be Catherine on the 1891 but her surname is McCormack -

James McCormack   37
Frances McCormack   24
Catherine McCormack   6 b. Monkwearmouth, Durham
John McCormack   4
Mary McCormack   6 Weeks

RG12 Piece 4149 Folio 61 Page 24.

Birth record for Mary (6 weeks) and John (4) has MMN Carroll

As yet no marriage found for Frances and James.

1901 for the same family -

James McCormack   46
Frances McCormack   40
Kate McCormack   16
John McCormack   13
Mary McCormack   10
James McCormack   8
Margaret McCormack   5
Dennis McCormack   1

RG13 Piece 4721 Folio 51 Page 44

The names James and Frances tie in with Catherine's children.

Hi

Have seen this before, but not sure whether its them as the 19** census shows Frances widowed and her children still with her, including Catherine, and both Catherine's children are missing; no sign of James nor Frances, born 1906 and 1909.

That threw me off the scent abit!

PS

Frances Carroll (1909) was born in 2 Vine Place.
I checked that address in 19** and there is a Carroll connection living there.

Emily Brown had married a John Carroll in 1898 and had two children before his death in 1907, aged 27 years. She then remarried to Ralph Meadows in Sunderland in 1908.
