My opinion is that it is more than likely the same person.  It is just a shortened version of the name.

One of the best ones I probably came across was looking for the children of a Sarah Hunter pre-registration. I had a few names and idea of their ages. A lovely clergyman checked the records for me and filled in some more names and dates but the eldest child was 'missing.' Family story was that bride was pregnant when the wedding took place so I asked him to check a bit earlier. The baptism for the first child was finally found- her son's baptism records her as Sarah Hawk!
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
