Cannell/Hurn marriage
« on: Sunday 06 August 17 10:56 BST (UK) »
George Cannell - b.1834 Swainsthorpe - m. 7 Nov 1860 Tharston to Ann Maria Hurn

Problem is that he appears to be living with his parents in the 1861 Census (RG09 1234 28 10) and is single

All other records, baptisms of children and Census returns, make it look as if the George in the 1861 Census and the Tharston marriage are the same person. I can find no 1861 Census record for Ann Maria, under Cannell or Hurn surnames.

Is there any possibility someone could kindly shed any light on this?

Thanks in advance.

Ann Maria Cannell and son George Henry, 1, could be in Tharston in 1861
piece 1233 folio 171 page 10
Transcribed Carnell on ancestry (Ann transcribed as John)
With her brother?

George Henry was born before the marriage, and baptized at Tharston 15 April 1860

This has solved the problem and has also answered a few other queries about the Hurn family.

I am still sure that the George is the one at home with his parents in Forncett in 1861 but does not explain why he is given as single - just an error?

The clarity of the return for 1861 Tharston for that family is not good: the second forename of the shopkeeper was Youngman, not ar all clear from the original.

Thanks jonw65 foir your help.

I would imagine it was an error, I've seen similar examples before.
George and Ann Maria had a son, John, baptized at Forcett St Peter, 27 October 1861. Which suggests that they were not exactly apart...
Of course George might have been a slightly reluctant groom, impossible to know!

There are a good number of children involved in this - 5 in the time before or during married to Ann Maria d. 1865, and 8 more with a second marriage to an Eliza Cutting.  Makes the 'reluctant' groom aspect a possibility!

Thanks again jonw65.

Did you see the note in the left hand margin of George Henry's baptism in 1860

'Afterwards married' - brilliant.

The baptism copy I was working from was a copy of the actual register and also had this in the left margin - unfortunately nowhere near as readable as on the Bishop's Transcript.

Just leaves me with this child's elder sister Caroline - baptised in Moulton on 16 Jan 1859 and listed as illegitimate daughter of Ann Marie. I wonder if she was George's daughter? Her Civil Reg of marriage in 1881 gives a third initial of C and parish record gives third forename as Cannell. Is this acceptable as proof?

Thanks The Yokel.
