« on: Tuesday 08 August 17 07:01 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am looking for a birth date and location for Richard George Toovey who died on 30th August 1887 at Adelaide South Australia.
He spent a lot of his time in Clare South Australia/
He married Margaret Josephine Portt or Poett in Victoria Australia in 1850.
Any assistance appreciated.
Thanks tidders

The marriage record on Vic bdm is a parish record as civil registration was not introduced until Jul 1853.

Sadly nothing about his 'native' place or father in the marriage announcement.

The Argus  1 Jul 1850
MARRIED.
By special license, on Saturday last, by the Rev. J. Butters, Richard George Toovey, of Melbourne, to Josephine Margarette, third daughter of Joseph Poett, Esq. Surgeon, of 51, Upper Marylebone-street, London.

Records of unassisted immigrants arriving Victoria start in 1852.  I can't see him on the assisted lists.

I suggest you search TROVE digitised newspapers using "Richard George Toovey".  A number of personal announcements along with his illness prior to his death.  He was a draper at Stepney by 1854.  I cannot see anything for him on my Victorian resources, many of which are not available online.

You have added a little more clue to my request (regarding the marriage).
I have managed to find a Richard George Toovey that was baptised in Essex Uk in 1829.
I am hoping to link these two.

Unfortunately the birth and death certificates in South Australia have scant information.  I don't know how you are going to validate your research.  Victorian birth certificates show the ages, places of birth of the parents.

Did Richard have any other family eg siblings, in Australia?

Might there be a clue in the son's name?

Where have you sourced the information?  I noticed you were seeking information about another TOOVEY family member who was in Melbourne and according to an online tree, died in South Australia.  There is no death registered in SA for that person.

I wonder if the source of this is the family tree published on Ancestry.

It suggests the parents of the boy were Richard Duppa TOOVEY and Sarah Whitaker LINGWOOD and gives a baptism date for Richard George as 20th Dec 1829 in Essex. His death is not shown.

The couple had numerous other children including one Eliza Gibbs TOOVEY and this girl was a witness to a marriage in 1868 when her sister Isabella Lingwood TOOVEY married. A certificate for this is attached.

GIBBS was perhaps some sort of family name.

Anyhow, it is  a possibility and may be worth further investigation.

Perhaps you have already explored this pathway through previous TOOVEY research ;D

There is some evidence that Lingwood TOOVEY was in Melbourne.
He was a brother of the Richard George TOOVEY on the tree cited above.

Have you examined this aspect?

There was an unclaimed letter for Lingwood in 1850, in Melbourne and Richard was married in 1850, top of 3rd column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article226520318
