conundrum ! After a lot of searching I have found many records detailing Francis seafaring voyages, each one of those state his place of birth as London. The only Francis I am coming up with is :
Francis William Latta
b. 14 Mar 1811  c. 4 Apr 1813 St George in the East, Stepney
Father: Michael (mariner ! )
Mother: Mary

excitement!.....however IF this is my Francis  he would have been 17 yrs old at the time of son Henry's birth in 1828 ? would this be a normal age to be married in 1820/30's ?

Now totally confused! I have a marriage of Francis Latta (mariner) 23 May 1839 St John Liverpool to Mary Davis, Francis's father : Michael, mother :  Mary which ties in with the birth record found previously..........wonders aloud if son Henry b.1828 was baseborn to Julia Rose but brought up by the Latta's ?

I do hope I am not confusing you as much as I am myself :)

Good finds Janet!

It looks like your on the right track?

I think finding Henry on an early census would help a great deal.

I have searched high & low for a baptism but not finding him & agree it isn't impossible that he was illegitimate.

Does the marriage to Mary give him as single?

This is 1841 (Kent) viewable on FindMyPast

It's an Institution i.e. could it be Henry (recorded as Rose), worth keeping a note?

'Does the marriage to Mary give him as single?'

yes it does, I assume from that he never married Julia Rose...........just wish I could find some trace of her :(

I've edited the above post to include the workhouse link.

I had a quick look to see if there may have been records kept but it doesn't look like it although maybe a thorough check will provide something?

The frustrating thing is there's no place of birth recorded on the transcription for 'that' Henry which isn't very helpful.....another road block  ::)

I can empathise, I had one last night searching for this lot & managed to mix up his mother who was deceased with his wife who was alive when Thomas died  ;D

Not found anything in 1851 yet!
