Finding out a persons parents before 1793

His marriage certificate doesn't state his fathers name

Is there any other way? Or is this the end of the road  :(

Is he alive when the census was taken? If so was he born in the same county or not. If so you can look for a baptism starting with the same parish he married in.

A clue could be his childrens names, often people named their children after their father/father in law and mother/mother in law.

None of this is 'proof' of parents but does give you some clues
