Alexander married a Harriet Fraser, so I think in order to make a connection it may require tracing back through her ancestry.

Hi All, I now have the birth certificate of my grandmother Christiana Fraser Grieve which shows her born on 28 March 1880 at 2 Liddell Street, Monkwearmouth, Co. Durham. Her parents are given as Thomas Grieve, occupation Mariner and Christiana nee Clark. (Note the spelling of both forenames which are often given in error as 'Christina')
I also have a copy of Thomas and Christiana's marriage certificate which shows them marrying on 30 March 1867 in Bishopwearmouth.
It still does not help me with the Cardno connection.
Any suggestions?
Best
