I agree that it ends with ing but I think the word above appears too long to be the word drown and just can't see it.

I think the person writing this seems to have tried to fit the whole word onto one line but failed so he then put it below.

Death Registered in Petworth, Sussex but is Chiddingfold in Surrey?

The first part seems to have a g in it. Maybe strangling rather than drowning?

Another vote for drowning.
I think what you are seeing as a 'g' is an ink splodge below the line.

Would agree with 'drowning'

The 'd' and 'i' are formed similar to their use in the words above.

I agree with Tonepad that the d is very similar to the one in accidental and in death.
