Perhaps we should start with your grandmother - who is she and where do you have her?

Also, the other children of Alfred and Frances would be helpful.

Tell me about it they got married in a hurry I think neither had any reason to be in Edinburgh the only thing I can find that links them was France WW1 possibly in the same place. She came from Cheshire he from Aberdeen nothing else of common interest.

Groindex gives mother's maiden name as Hill for the birth of Frances Caroline Clarke in Whitehaven.

The 1861 census found by Heywood with Caroline Clarke on it shows a younger sister called Clara age 4 b Manchester.

Groindex has an entry for a Clara Clark(no E) b J quarter 1856 Manchester - mother's maiden name Hill. (She is the only Clara Clark with or without the E showing as born in Manchester in the correct time frame).

William

Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

Not sure what you mean here. Do you mean that they were both in France? I would think that WW1 was an important link. It caused couples from very different places to get together.
There are a couple of very brief published trees which state that Edith married William Gill in November 1918 and their first child was born December 1919 so no apparent reason to hurry.
I wonder if it is just an error on the marriage certificate?
