Sorry but I'm confused!

You were looking for "Nora Ann McGrady" & have found her as Nora Boyle but say she wasn't married to a Mr Boyle  ???

Annie

Thank you for your message.

There are three cousins with a similar name and same surname who were born only years apart.

I'm looking for Nora Ann McGrady, lived in the Kensingtown area of Liverpool, was the daughter of Daniel, born in Derryola, Co. Antrim.  She was born abt. 1899/1900 in Liverpool.  She never married and lived and worked in a convent.

The other Norah McGrady, born in 1907, daughter of James, lived in Toxteth and married to Robert Henry Boyle, is her cousin.  There's also a third cousin called Norah McGrady.  She too lived in Toxteth and got married.

;D I'm confused too about why Nora Boyle is her cousin - or isn't!

But with regard to your comment about whether she was a teacher or a nun... the Notre Dame Sisters (nuns) were a teaching Order so if she was a Notre Dame Sister then she most likely was a teacher - if that makes sense!

I've been researching and it seems nuns were given a different surname.  I don't know if I should write to each convent and ask if they could help me out?

Hello,
I am confused too as you say you have found Nora Boyle in the convent.
Nuns did not change their surnames. They used to take a saint's name so may be referred to as Sister Mary Joseph etc but would still retain their birth name and surname for official documents.

I agree with Heywood. I have my mother's original reference from school signed by the headmistress Hilda Carroll, but I know the head of the school was an FCJ nun. They would use their own names on civil documents and the official school-leaving reference counted as such.

I'm even more confused, you say she never married but also you say you have found her under the name of Boyle at Notre Dame b1900.

Sorry for the 'confusion', just re-read the whole post, and typed the wrong surname of the Nora found in the convent.  I don't have access to FindMyPast, but someone who checked for me said it's the Nora I was looking for.   I'll write to the convent to double check and hopefully find where she was buried.

Thanks.  Just found her original baptism record.  It says she was born on August 22nd 1899 and was baptised on September 3rd 1899.  I keep trying everywhere and no luck.
