Bible - age of
« on: Monday 21 August 17 09:03 BST (UK) »
I have recently had an opportunity to view a family bible and I am trying to make sense of the entries.  Unfortunately, I do not know how old the bible is - the title page is torn so any publication date which might have been on that page is gone.  However, this small sticker was on the inside back cover near the spine.  Does it mean anything to anyone?  I imagine it could be anytime from 1880 to 1925 based on the dates of entries.  It belonged to a family in the Sydney area but, of course, the bible might have been published overseas.  J

Sorry, the attachment didn't 'take'.  I'll have to figure out how to reduce the size.  In the meantime it has two words   ...ATKINS
                       ...INDER.     (which could be "binder")

Might be worth looking into.

There was a C O Atkins, bookbinders in Tasmania.

Found a few articles in trove.

The Mercury (Hobart, Tas. : 1860 - 1954)
Fri 31 Aug 1860

C. O. ATKINS
BEGS to inform his Customers and the Public generally that he intends carrying on the business of
BOOKBINDING At his Establishment, Murray-street, where all orders will be executed with neatness and despatch.
FANCY REPOSITORY,
MURRAY-STREET.
N.B.-" I beg to give notice that I have transferred my Business and all my Tools to Mr. C. O. ATKINS, who will complete all work left in my hands.

I thought it may be WATKINS

There is a similar bible for sale on ebay
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351863702874

Oxford University Press, 1880 for British and Foreign Bible Society.
Appointed to be read in Churches. . Full-Leather.
Book Condition: Good 16 x 10cm x 5cm
The pages are in very good condition (see Photos)
original leather-binding, gilted edges
Has "Watkins Binder" stamp on inside back cover

Edit: Noticed another on ebay dated 1859 - probably reprinted over many years - may be difficult to date with the missing title page. Perhaps compare the designs on the cover with any you can find online.

Either/both those posts are of interest. thank you.  One of those who made entries in this bible hailed from Hobart, Tasmania before settling in NSW.  I will follow up!  J
