Ah,

I have replicated your problem on internet explorer (v11.540.15063.0) - appears to be a 'feature'.

I can both type and paste URL's into gmail and move on in Chrome

If you have the website name in your document / database, when you right-click it should give you a Hyperlink option.  Click on that to make it a hyperlink.  The same process will remove the hyperlink if you decide you don't want it as a hyperlink.

However, I believe some databases create hassles with hyperlinks.
If you are doing this for someone / some organisation, why not ask them how to do what you want, in their database?

Just to muddy the waters a little - I have no problem pasting urls into the same version of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 nor on Firefox - I doubt therefore that it is a "feature", possibly something in your settings

I don't use it but isn't there a setting to 'compose in plain text' or 'compose in html'??

Hit the nail on the head .....

Click on Compose - as if about to create a new email
On the tool bar at the bottom of the compose window select the downward facing triangle at the right hand side (see image)
Click on this and make sure that Plain Text is NOT selected .... if it is simply click on it and it will be deselected.
Close the email and Googlemail should remember your settings choice.

Just checked my settings, and "Plain Text" is NOT selected.  I then ticked it, and then unticked it, but it still makes no difference : any hyperlinks I've cut from elsewhere and paste into my Compose screen just turn up as plain text.   :(
